I was complimented by the midwife on my coaching ability

Peter Jackson - Thursday, January 06, 2011

Rebecca was a week and 2 days overdue and did not want to be induced. Instead we went to our obstetrician and had her manipulate her. She was ready!!! Straight away there was movement and the excitement began.

Rebecca woke around 4am with much stronger contractions.

We began your breathing exercises and listened to the Cd's, from there we proceeded to the bath for a massage and more relaxing.

I kept Rebecca calm and relaxed, stirring up every possible ounce of oxytocin she could produce.

Once her contractions started lasting between 45 and 60 secs, we thought it was time to head to the hospital and have this baby.

We arrived around 6:30am, 7cm dilated and made ourselves as comfortable as possible.

Now you remember that Rebecca had a very traumatic first delivery and was having fears of this delivery going down the same path, not to mention the back pain she had due to an old sporting injury.

Rebecca started to tense up, wanting an epidural, which we had both decided against unless it was the only possible alternative.

Now is where the calmbirth® class helped me be the assertive partner that Rebecca required. I requested the midwife leave us alone so I could get Rebecca back to calm and focused state.

Her back pain was getting unbearable (in Rebecca's words) so we administered some pethidine just to take the edge off and help her relax.

From there Rebecca was a pure inspiration, listening to what her body was telling her and pushing when she felt the urge.

At 9:19am our beautiful daughter greeted us with no cry but what looked to be a smile.

Straight away she was placed upon Rebecca's chest. She started suckling within 30secs, truly amazing to watch!!!!

Thank you so much for giving me direction and the ability to be of practical assistance to Rebecca and our daughter.

I was complimented by the midwife on my coaching ability and the difference I made to the delivery.

Michael

P.S A smile is permanently glued to my face now for having this euphoric experience.
